What To Pack for Your Summer Hiking Elopement

Deciding to elope in nature is a choice that many couples are opting for nowadays. The serenity and beauty of the great outdoors offer a picturesque backdrop for an intimate and heartfelt ceremony. Surrounded by towering trees, gentle streams, or majestic mountains, exchanging vows in nature allows for a sense of peace and calm that can be hard to find in more traditional wedding settings.

Eloping in nature also provides opportunities for stunning photographs that capture the raw beauty of the natural world. From golden sunsets to lush green forests, the setting itself becomes a key element in documenting the love and commitment shared between two people.

Whether it's a spontaneous decision or a long-planned event, eloping in nature allows couples to focus on what truly matters: their love for each other. Away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, nature provides a quiet sanctuary where couples can embrace the simplicity and purity of their relationship.

The natural surroundings serve as a constant reminder of the beauty and wonder of the world, mirroring the deep connection and unity shared between two people embarking on a new chapter together.

If you have decided to elope during a warmer season, in a natural setting, then this information will help you plan when it comes to gear and attire.

What is an outdoor hiking Elopement?

This type of elopement is a wedding celebration that takes place in the wilderness. It often requires some hiking or even some off-roading before you reach your destination. The experience is truly about the journey and finding unique locations that celebrate you as a couple. These types of elopement days are all about embracing what nature has to offer!

Why Do I Need Gear?

Like any hiking or camping trip, it's always wise to have a checklist so you're adequately prepared for your time outdoors. If you're experienced hikers, you may already have all the necessary hiking gear but having a wedding ceremony midway through your trip definitely adds a few more unique elements to your gear checklist. We've created this guide of helpful tips so you can be fully prepared for the adventure ahead. This is the gear you'll be needing for your summer hiking elopement, so you can stay safe and comfortable as you journey through the wilderness together.

Your Gear Checklist:

Backpacks

First things first, you're going to need a comfortable backpack. There's nothing worse than trying to lug all of your gear in a flimsy plastic bag. Even if you're not hiking particularly far, you're still going to have quite a long list of things to bring with you, and you'll feel more comfortable carrying it all on your back. Look for something that has padded shoulder straps, side pockets for a water bottle and a few different compartments so you can have some of your hiking essentials in one part and your elopement essentials in the other.

Comfortable Shoes

Depending on how adventurous you are, you're either going to need a good pair of hiking shoes or even a full-on pair of boots if you're going through streams and rocky terrain. The last thing you want is to risk slipping and falling. Make sure you're wearing a good pair of socks to avoid blisters or any rolling inside your boot. You can always pack a nice pair of wedding shoes into your backpack, but some couples love the more rugged look of hiking boots mixed with their classic wedding attire.

Water and Snacks

To handle the summer heat, you'll want to pack enough water to keep you both hydrated for the many hours you'll be out hiking and taking photos. If you'll be going on a longer hike, a water bladder provides easy access, so you don't need to keep reaching into your backpack. Some couples choose to bring a portable water filter to replenish their water from nearby streams.

Since you're going to be on the move for much of the day, remember to pack some snacks or even a picnic lunch (we even have a beautiful picnic blanket for you to utilize and are happy to set everything up for you), depending on how long you plan on being out. You don't want a grumbling stomach while you exchange your vows, and you'll want to replenish your energy as you're hiking.

Change of Clothes

It might make for some great photos, but hiking in the heat with a wedding dress or dress pants is the furthest thing from comfortable. The best thing you can do is pack your wedding clothes separately to ensure they stay clean and so you're comfortable during your hike. If you have the room in your pack, consider packing a light change of clothes for the trek back in case your original outfit gets too dirty or sweaty.

Bug Spray and Sunscreen

Bugs can quickly get annoying while you're trying to enjoy this extraordinary journey with your partner. Bug spray can be a lifesaver while you're hiking and while you're trying to take photos. Having to constantly swat flies and mosquitoes away can take away from those romantic elopement vibes. Another critical thing to remember is sunscreen. Protecting yourself from the sun is always a priority, and you definitely don't want to look sunburnt in your wedding photos either.

The Right Wedding Attire

Whether you plan on hiking in your dress clothes or changing into them once you've found the perfect location, you're still going to want to choose something comfortable while you're out in the heat. Your wedding dress and or dress shirt should be made of breathable fabrics that aren't too restricting. They’ll also need to handle being folded into a backpack without coming out completely wrinkled.

Other Key Items

Light Jacket - Even in the summer months, the nights can get chilly. Pack some light jackets, so you aren't cold on the walk back to your car.

A Dry Bag  - There's always a chance of rain. If your entire backpack isn't waterproof, get yourself a dry bag so your rings, phones, wallets, and the marriage certificate won't get wet.

Bluetooth Speaker - If you'd like to listen to music while you're hiking or want to have a particular song play during your ceremony, pack a Bluetooth speaker that you can keep in your backpack.

Trash Bags - Always remember to clean up after yourselves when you're spending time in nature. It's vital to preserve the beauty that attracted you to these locations and ensure that no wildlife is harmed by the trash left behind.

Hair and Makeup Touch-Up Kit - You'll inevitably get a little sweaty on your adventure. Packing some light makeup and some styling tools can help you take care of any touch-ups before photos.

Toiletries - There's a good chance you're not going to come across a bathroom during your adventure elopement so pack some products like toilet paper and wipes so you can comfortably take care of business while you're out.

Be Prepared

Hopefully, these tips will help you feel more prepared for your summer elopement. It's so important to stay safe in the heat and ensure that you still feel and look your best while in front of the camera. Planning ahead with the right items makes this possible!
